To work as a Passenger Assistant alongside a student of any age and to be in a vehicle as part of a contracted route you all persons must have an Enhanced DBS check.
What is an Enhanced DBS Check?
A DBS check is a criminal records check and an Enhanced DBS check is the most comprehensive criminal records check available. It simply provides detailed information about criminal history, including any information held by local police.
Why is this needed?
All Private Hire drivers and Taxi drivers need to have an Enhanced DBS Check because they often transport children or vulnerable adults and this is a requirement of the licensing conditions. Working as a Passenger Assistant you are effectively working in the same capacity with the exception that you are not driving a vehicle, but you are there to look after the passengers.
What type of DBS Check is required?
Each DBS Check is done specific to the role you are going to do. To work as a Passenger Assistant you must have an Enhanced DBS Certificate that is either for a Taxi Driver or a Passenger Assistant. This must be clearly stated as the role on the DBS Certificate.
Can I use the DBS Certificate from a previous job?
No, unless you were working as either a Taxi driver or a Passenger Assistant you will not be able to use your previous DBS Certificate. For example, if you work in Social Care or as a Teacher, you would still need a DBS Certificate that is for a Passenger Assistant.
